Jeweller Emma Milne-Watson creates pieces that tell of a life well travelled. Handmade in small batches in her Sussex studio, her work draws on landscapes, memories and objects gathered over time, balancing instinct for colour with a storied sense of permanence. Each Milne Watson piece feels worked into rather than perfected – shaped by process, place and the subtle irregularities that come with making by hand. 

The same appreciation for the enduring and the everyday extends beyond her studio. Time is divided between making, walking, family life, travel and the natural world. There is a gentle respect and continuity to the way Emma approaches both her work and life: pieces and memories collected and valued for the stories they hold.

Her wardrobe follows a similar instinct. On Instagram is a recognisable handwriting: close, candid crops, from knitwear to shirts and summer dresses, topped with layers of handcrafted jewellery – each composition bringing texture, colour and character. As with her designs, so her chosen &Daughter pieces are made to be lived in – the polo T-Knit that speaks to changing seasons, the short and long-sleeve
slouchy styles that layer and adapt to travels and daily life. 

For our latest Friends of &Daughter conversation, Emma reflects on the places that continue to inspire her, the relationship between making and dressing, and the beauty of building a life – and a wardrobe – through thoughtful layers.

Where are you in the world today, and what drew you there?  
Right now, I’m about to walk my dogs up on the South Downs overlooking the sea. The sun is setting and the warm breeze of the sea is cooling us down after the most amazing summer.  The fields are parched and it’s like we have been transported to my favourite island, Mallorca. 
 
Your work is shaped by travel and by places that hold memories. Is there a place you return to, physically or in your mind, that continues to inspire you? 
The place I am always inspired by and am drawn to is Mallorca, and recently
Dartmoor [in Devon, southwest England]. Here the light always seems more vivid
and brings me to a state of calm and back to nature. Anything seems possible when immersed in these landscapes. 

You have spoken of days filled with making, walking, nature and family. Are there any rituals you rarely begin a day without? 
To begin my day, I need my morning coffee.  It is something I have contemplated giving up, but I feel this ritual helps me to land and sit in one place, no words, no phone, just myself. 
 
Your jewellery is made by hand. Does this slower way of working influence the way you get dressed each morning? 
Dressing for work has become a two-piece uniform, my husband's ancient
A.P.C. jeans or Suzie Kondi harem pants, and then alternating cotton men’s shirts.
Most of the day, I am working at my desk in the studio, and recently because we
have a building project that I'm designing and managing, I need to be able to be
comfortable to be on site with the builders. 
 
How do &Daughter pieces become part of your day? Are they something you reach for instinctively, or do they accompany particular moments? 
They are always draped on the back of my desk chair so that I can easily layer on
when I’m cold (which is most of the time), or when I'm in London for appointments, they become the essential add-on, if in the summer I don’t take a coat. In the winter months, their perfect colours bring some fun to my simple dressing. 
 
What, for you, is a day well spent? 
A day well spent goes a little like this: coffee in bed, Zoom Pilates class, a full day of designing new pieces and bespoke commissions for my lovely clients, then an early supper, followed by a meditative evening walk with my husband and dogs, watching the sunset over the downs and sea. Then I'm a happy lady!
